Human Resources Manager

Old Brown Dog Veterinary Partners is veterinary founded, owning and operating veterinary hospitals that are consistently recognized as top performers.  We leverage real veterinary experience to make legitimate and viable improvements to veterinary hospitals through fair practices and genuine communication.

Old Brown Dog’s partner hospital base is growing and are looking for an Human Resources professional to support our HR strategy.  The HR Manager plays a pivotal role in the ultimate employee experience: Finestkind.  The HR Manger will make recommendations and lead activities with Finestkind in mind, which also includes enabling newly acquired veterinary teams transition with minimal disruption and with your HR expertise, help us sustainably grow practices from the inside out so that our teams feel empowered to be the best they can be.

This position is predominately remote with approximately 10-15% travel.  The Human Resources Manager must reside within a 3 hour auto commute to our New England partner hospitals and able to fly as needed to hospitals outside the New England area.  This position reports to the Director of Operations.

Recruiting of the Finestkind

  • Driver of the recruitment of Associates and other executive level positions such as ad building, ad placement, pre-screening and initiation of employment background screenings
  • Work with Operations Team and Practice Managers to support Finestkind strategies/talent acquisition activities (i.e. job posting development & placement, screenings, etc).
  • Work with Practice Mangers to ensure positive, effective new hire onboarding experience
  • Work with Partners/Operations on workforce planning and leadership development
  • Representation at employment and brand awareness events

Finestkind – Cultivating Talent

  • Serve as an OBD & Finestkind Ambassador
  • Work with partners & leadership to align HR strategies with business mission & strategies
  • Lead employment experience and continuous improvement efforts which include enhancements to culture/morale/engagement, benefits management, stay interviews, retention strategies, exit interviews, staff surveys, etc. Ensure employees are heard
  • Provide insight and guidance to Practice Managers in the areas of conflict resolution, staffing obstacles, employee performance plans, disciplinary action and termination
  • Track HR key performance indicators such as employment & retention metrics, staff satisfaction, compensations information; Development & execution of HR objectives and goals through contribution and collaboration
  • Lead and manage HR activities as it applies to mergers & acquisitions of new hospitals
  • Contribute and participate in performance reviews at executive level


  • Provide HR legal and corporate compliance expertise to Partners, Operations, and Practice Managers; Identifies any gaps and/or risks, communicates recommendations and necessary actions; completes any necessary records or reporting
  • Provide guidance to Practice Managers on workplace investigations.
  • Ensure employee handbook is up-to-date, accurate, and employees are advised of any revisions
  • HR forms and document management; DVM license management
  • Ensure all Practice Managers are provided & complete necessary HR trainings (i.e. sexual harassment, diversity & inclusion, reasonable suspicion, employment law)


  • Timely and accurate payroll processing which includes collection of necessary documentation
  • Benefits enrollment & renewal including audit/census management
  • Pet Care Benefits management

  • 2+ years HR leadership (employee life cycle, payroll, employment law AND recruiting)
  • PHR, SHRM certification or Bachelor’s in HR or 3-5 years robust HR experience in lieu of cert.
  • Knowledge in HR Management, business principles, regulatory & legal requirements (state, federal, jurisdictional)
  • Paylocity experience preferred, not required
  • Veterinary experience a plus, not required
  • Start-up and/or M&A experience preferred
